So let's get you up to speed. I am twelve, my whole town has been destroyed right in front of my eyes, I'm the only survivor, well I thought I was. Until now.
******

BEFORE
I am eight. I just came back from Healing 101. I am on the crash course to be the next generation's healer. Today we went to the hospital to help out. My dad has taken most of the healers to journey with him to the Other Side as some freak accident happened. Many got hurt and needs immediate help.
"Tammy, I have got to go on this mission. I'll be back as soon as I can honey. Meanwhile, make sure you follow Mrs. Been to the hospital everyday from now okay? They need healers and you are one of the best in the class. Be safe and stay in school. Don't skip. No late nights either without permission. I'll call everyday okay?" my dad said as he placed a kiss on my forehead.
"Sure daddy. Stay safe too!" I said giving him a hug.

I smiled at that memory as I walked home that day. I was really exhausted as there was a bad case of gloudarad spreading in the hospital today. And I was the only junior healer who didn't faint from the stench. But still. Horrible. I entered the house.
"Mom? Mommy, I'm home," I called, closing the door.
Empty. Why am I not surprised? I guess I have to put myself to sleep. Again. I picked up the note on the table. As I expected, it is written by my mom to me saying she had a function to attend yada yada and go to bed early bla bla bla. The clock striked eleven in the hall. I yawned. I didn't know I spent that long in the hospital. I walked up to my room and threw myself on the bed fully dressed. I knew my mom is going to kill me if she found out I went to bed fully dressed but I was too tired to care. I closed my eyes.
******
"Tammy, wake up. Honey, get up. This is urgent. Get up!" a voice said, shaking me from my sleep.
"Huh?" I rubbed my eyes and grabbed my glasses from the bedside table. I yawned.
"Mom? What's going on?" I looked outside. It was still dark outside. I groaned.
"Look mom, if you're going to complain that I slept fully dressed, can it wait till morning? There was this really nasty case of gloudarad in the hospital and I was there till late."
"No honey. Just get up. I would ask you to dress, but you're already dressed. Come with me. Something happened and we need your help. Immediately," she said pulling me up.
I instantly sat up. "Why? What is it? Is it dad?"
"No, no darling. He will be back in two weeks the most. This is happening here. Right now."
I got up and straighten my clothing.
"Good golly you slept in your healer's uniform?" my mom exclaimed.
I glanced down at my purple long bell-bottomed sleeved shirt and red flare skirt. I looked up at her and gave a I'm-sorry look.
There was a knock on the door. "Sorry but Mrs. Keene? We really need your daughter. We need all the help we can get. Right this instant," a man said at the door.
My eyes widened. "Mr. Finn!"
Mr. Finn looked at me and smiled. "Hi Tammy. Sorry we have to wake you up but this is an emergency."
We three exited my house and walked briskly heading to the hospital. I couldn't believe it. I was walking next to Mr. Finn, the best healer in the whole of Sphinx.
"How bad is it?" my mom asked him.
"Very." he answered.
"Are you sure my daughter will be able to help? This is really very advanced stuff."
He looked at me. "Sure. According to Mrs. Been she was the only junior healer who didn't faint from the pungent smell of gloudarad on a large scale. She is more than ready for this."
"I'm sorry but ready for what?" I interrupted.
My mom sighed. "There has been a fire. Not just any fire, Keratine Fire. On a very large scale. We don't have enough healers to treat everyone as soon as possible. It is very.."
"Fatal. Yeah we learned how to treat it. But how am I going to get into the emergency ward? Only licensed healers can get through." I said.
They both sighed and stopped outside the hospital. Seriously, what's with everyone sighing today? Is it international sighing day?
"That's why, Tammy, you're going to be the youngest healer ever in the history of Sphinx." Mr. Finn continued, calmly taking out his wand from his sleeve. "What is your favourite colour?"
"Gold. Wait what? What are you doing?" I was still in the dark about this.
"Mrs. Keene, if you would please," Mr. Finn said.
"Alright." She took a deep breathe and drew her wand. "I, Patricia Keene, as the acting mayor of Sphinx, would like to permit the following ceremony to happen."
There was a slight glow from her wand and everything went silent. I was very confused but I didn't bother to ask because I know none of them are going to answer my question.
"I, Harold Finn, the Head of the Healing Department, would like to declare Tammy Keene of Sphinx to be one of the licensed healer in the whole of Sphinx. Now, please put your hand on the Book of Sphinx and repeat this oath after me."
I was shocked and dazed. I couldn't believe this was happening to me. I was too happy to care. I obliged.
"I, Tammy Keene, will uphold this position as long as I live and would not ever deceive it."
"I, Tammy Keene, will uphold this position as long as I live and would not ever deceive it," I repeated, glowing.
"Here, your official badge and this," he said handing me a badge with my name on it and a gold belt which he fastened around my waist.
"Now, let's get going. Stand at the entrance, it will let you in now. Hurry, we don't have much time," my mom said pushing me to the entrance.
"Reading. Welcome, Ms. Keene," an electronic voice said. The grand double doors I dreamed of going in everyday opened and I stepped in.
I didn't have time to take in the beauty of the healing department. It was chaos. Healers were rushing from bed to bed, calming down patients and casting healing spells. I saw a little boy with pus exploding from his wound, a side effect of Keratine Fire. I immediately drew my wand and went to help. It was the longest night ever. I worked non-stop, preparing potions, saying incantations and calming patients down. It was broad daylight as we managed to get everyone treated.
"Good job, Ms. Keene," Mr. Finn said, placing a hand on my shoulder. He looked exhausted and overworked.
"Thanks Mr. Finn. For everything." I said sincerely.
He gave me a weak smile and headed off to his office. I felt dreadfully tired and considered going home. As I was turning away, I caught a sight of a little girl, barely four years old. I gasped. She seem to have suffered the worse among all that I have seen. She was moaning slightly, tears cascading down her face every now and then. I approached her.
"Umm, hi I'm a healer," I blurted. I mentally slapped myself on the forehead. She is in a lot of pain and I'm introducing myself?
I noticed her left hand started gushing out blood again and she looked as if she was going to start sobbing.
"Hey, don't worry, everything is going to be okay. Just wait and see," I comforted her.
I waved my wand over the wound and instantly it stopped bleeding and closed up.
"What's your name?" I asked gently.
"Naomi. Naomi Trent," she answered, barely audible.
"Hi Naomi, I'm Tammy."
She squinted at my badge. "It says Keenie."
I looked down and laughed. I didn't realize that my badge had spelled my name wrongly.
"Well, you can call me Keenie."
"Tammy, there you are dear! I'm assigning healers to the various patients now. Can you be in charge of little Naomi here?" Mrs. Been boomed.
I looked at Naomi and smiled. She took my hand and smiled back at me.
"Sure, no problem Mrs. Been.

AFTER
"Naomi? Nao, it's me, Tammy," I said crouching down next to the quivering girl.
Speedy shot me a confused look but I waved it away. I was too absorbed that I might not be the only survivor. There might be other survivors! I'm not that alone anymore! I think.
"Keenie?" Naomi said looking at me sideways.
"Yes Nao, it is me. Keenie," I said desperately. Why didn't she believe me?
"No," she said shaking her head. "Keenie wouldn't dress like that!"
I looked down at my dark blue jacket, striped gray and black top and black jeans. Oh yeah, I don't wear this get-up at Sphinx. I took off my jacket and put it around a shivering Naomi. I looked around the alley. It was completely deserted. I sighed.
"Tammy?" Speedy said questionly.
I took out my wand and waved it. My clothes was immediately replaced by the purple shirt and red skirt. A soft clink told me my belt was there too. Speedy sat there with his mouth opened.
"Tammy? Wearing a skirt? I thought you said you hated wearing skirts?" he spluttered.
I swiped at him. "Yes, yes I do. This is what I use to wear back at Sphinx."
A sudden wave of nostalgia hit me. I turned to Naomi.
"Nao?" I said gently. "Believe me now?"
"Keenie!" she squealed and hugged me tight.
I hugged her back tightly. This is too good too be true.
But why do I have a sinking feeling in my gut? Not good.
